What are Mussels & Clams

Mussels and clams are from the mollusk family. Both are edible and very heart-healthy. Mussels have 146 calories per 3 oz serving, 20.23 g of protein and 3.81 g of heart-healthy unsaturated fat with a host of good vitamins and minerals.

Clams carry pretty much the same goodness; 100 g (10 Sm clams) have 148 calories, 25.5 g protein, 2 g unsaturated fat, 5.1 g of carbohydrates. Clams are an excellent source of iron, zinc, and B12.

Mussels can be found in freshwater lakes, streams, creeks, and where the ocean meets the shore. Clams spend most of their time buried in the sands of the ocean floor.

Mussels and clams are a very quick, healthy, and tasty meal.

You Will Need…

This is a super easy and simple Steamed Mussels & Clams dish that does not require a lot of prep time or cook time. What you will need is 1 lb each of mussels and clams (washed and scrubbed), 1 shallot, 1 large lemon, fresh thyme and rosemary (one sprig of each), and chopped fresh basil. 2 cups broth/water, 2 tbs salted butter, 1 tbs white wine vinegar, and season to taste.

Place the washed and scrubbed mussels and clams into your pot along with the vinegar, I use Simply Ming Non-Stick Wok, pour in your broth. The seasonings I use for this dish are fresh ground pepper, sea salt, old bay seasoning, and Adobe (season to your tastes).

Roughly chop the shallot and slice half the lemon, put those into your pot along with all other ingredients. Cover your pot and let it boil. Seafood does not take long to cook. This dish will be completely ready in about 5-10 minutes.

Once the shells have opened up it is ready to eat, take the rest of the lemon and cut them into wedges to serve alongside your dish. Enjoy!

Cool Additions

Steamed mussels and clams can be paired with so many things. Seafood is a light dish and goes well with steamed or roasted vegetables, rice also makes a good side dish and works well with the broth.

I buy freshly baked bread (French or Italian) to dip into the broth. The hubby and I eat this dish standing around the stove dipping our bread in the pot to soak up the broth. It’s so good! Amazingly flavorful!

  2. Wow what a great post! Food is always one of the best topics, and seafood? Yum! Easy is always good too. Steamed mussels and clams, makes my mouth water as I type. I really like how you explained mussels and clams and provided nutritional value specifically with numbers. I love seafood a lot because it is amazingly tasty though very simple to cook. I have never tasted anything close to mussels and clams but from your post, I’m getting eager to have a feel of how it tastes.
