Let me start by saying I am not a paid advertiser or promoter for SodaStream. This post is a combination of product facts, consumer opinions, and my personal experience using this product.
SodaStream claims to be a healthier alternative to sodas and flavored sparkling waters as well as being eco-friendly. We don’t always realize how much we throw away like cans and plastic bottles; this product claims to reduce the amount of that waste.
The SodaStream can be cost effective but it depends on its usage.
SodaStream International Ltd is an Israel based manufacturing company making devices which carbonates water by adding carbon dioxide to make plain soda water. The company offers a variety of flavored syrups to add to your sparkling water.

SodaStream also offers a Hydration Pack which costs a bit more and includes standard 2x carbonate cylinder, 2-yr. warranty and free shipping. You get free shipping and a 2-year warranty with the Starter Pack and the Hydration Pack.
Their website offers replacement cylinders, decorated bottles and bottle bundles plus just about every flavor of syrup and fruit drop you could think to want.
The machine comes in four colors: black, white, pink, blue (teal) depending on which type/style sparkling water maker you purchase.
A Healthier Alternative
Let’s throw out a few things about sodas and other sugary drinks that may catch your attention.
- Made with toxic chemicals – I have used a bottle or can of Coke to clean the rust out of my toilet. That can’t be good to drink.
- Can lower fertility – I have heard this before, a study done in 2018 published in Epidemiology found drinking 1 or more sugary drinks a day lowers your chance of getting pregnant.
- Can increase the chances of having a stroke
- Creates belly fat – 1 sugary drink a day adds 1 lb. of fat a week and has been found to increase belly fat a good 3 inches
- Creates more waste with plastic bottles and cans
Now, let’s throw out some facts about the syrup and fruit drops by SodaStream:
- No additives
- Two-Thirds less sugar than soda’s and other sugary drinks
- 1 x 1L bottle can help reduce more than 3,700 bottles and cans in landfills
- Cost effective for a person or family of heavy soda drinkers
If you compare the two, SodaStream is the healthier choice and they have a line of naturally sweetened syrups.
Worth The Buy – YES!
Whether SodaStream is worth buying depends on how often you buy sodas for you or the family. Occasional drinkers of sugary drinks may recoup their costs for this product. Occasional would be me, I may drink a soda a week and it will most likely be ginger ale.
Hardcore drinkers would find SodaStream a lot more cost effective. The math changes according to your demographic simply stating, prices change depending on your location. So let’s break it down this way…
If used correctly one carbonate cartridge makes 60 L of soda water, 1 bottle of syrup or fruit drops makes 12 liters of soda; you will need 5 syrup bottles to make 60 L of soda. Don’t forget you will have to replace the cartridge and the syrup when you run out. The cartridge is on SodaStream.com for $29.95 and the syrup prices at around $4.99 each.
Cartridges tend to last 3-4 weeks for 30 L and 6-8 weeks for 60 L depending on your usage. It should only take 5-7 pumps to create a good fizz for your drinks.
So, I will leave it up to you to decide if SodaStream is worth the buy.
For me, I got one for my son and his friends. It was a lot cheaper than buying 6 or 12 packs, it was even cheaper than buying liters of drinks that would most likely sit and get flat after only a couple of drinks. I was never a fan of sugary drinks or soda so I rarely bought them until my son went into middle school and high school and we had kids over.
Now I am an empty nester and it may take me a week to drink a 20 oz ginger ale making purchasing one again not to cost effective for me. I would need to drink at least 4 sodas a day for this product to be worth it.
Any Difference in Taste?
I have not tried all of their flavors but the ones I did try like Cola, Dr. Pete, and the Lemon Lime was pretty spot on when it came to taste. Now again. I am not a hardcore soda drinker and those that are had told me they could tell a difference but not necessarily in the taste just the “bite” or fizz. The fizz does not stay fizzy for too long.
Hardcore soda drinkers could also tell the decrease in their sugar intake. The decrease in sugar is a great thing but the flip side of that is, if your body is used to that sugar and you are now giving it two-thirds less, you will more than likely start going through withdrawal.
